The REALt is a unique language stimulation program designed to help speech-language therapists, teachers, and even parents nurture the development of complex language skills in preschool and school-aged children. The REALt leverages local expertise and cultural understanding to address the specific needs of South African children and the materials are presented simultaneously in Afrikaans and South African English, catering to the country's diverse linguistic landscape. In addition, the REALt program is grounded in research, ensuring effective language therapy techniques.

The REALt can significantly benefit children who experience language challenges such as:

  • Language delays: Children who haven't reached expected language milestones for their age.

  • Specific language impairment (SLI): Difficulties with language development despite normal intelligence and hearing.

  • Language disorders: Language difficulties associated with other conditions.

  • "School language" struggles: Foundation Phase learners facing challenges with the language demands of the classroom.

  • Second language acquisition: Children learning English or Afrikaans as a second or foreign language.

The kit can also be adapted for use with adults experiencing aphasia, a language disorder caused by brain damage.

The REALt Comprehensive Kit is comprised of the following elements:

  • A comprehensive User Manual which explains the program and its components.

  • 361 interactive picture stimuli presented on a USB drive for engaging computer-based activities, targeting eight key language areas like articles, conjunctions, narratives, and more.

  • A printed Therapist Question Book containing questions related to the pictures, facilitating effective therapy sessions.

  • A laminated A3 character poster introducing and reinforcing the characters featured in the pictures.

  • Home practice materials on a USB includes 130 printable story sheets that can be folded into mini-books for engaging home practice exercises that reinforce the targeted language skills.

 Applications:

The REALt kit is ideal for:

  • Speech-language therapists

  • Teachers working with children experiencing language difficulties

  • Parents seeking to support their child's language development

By incorporating the REALt kit into therapy and educational settings, professionals can empower children to develop strong receptive and expressive language skills, setting them on the path to successful communication and literacy acquisition.
